I had just gotten back from studying in Chile, and my Chileano was coming along nicely. Unfortunately, sneaky shades of confusion crept onto my path while studying, in Havana, Cuba. I had yet to realize, although Chileano was Spanish, Spanish wasn’t Chileano. The same, and different Of course!?!

My second week, while roaming the streets of Old Havanna, I approached a pair of Cubanos while consulting a language app. My thumbs flew while crossing the street, and following a brief check with mastered Chileano, I asked the two Cubanos a question. Instantly, and to my chagrin, my words ignited an intense verbal exchange accentuated with hand gestures. Confused and frustrated , I turned away.

Soaked in sweaty embarrassment, I wanted to ignore the laughter that ushered me onto the street.

A few minutes later, and still thrilled to be in Cuba, I thought to interpret the incident. Why were the nicest people I'd ever met, dead set at laughing at me?

Back in Chile, mama Mariana, would clear the air, and together we nearly drowned in laughter. Turns out I had been roaming Cuba identifying my a hip pocket, as a scrotum! I like to imagine mama was embarrassed for me, but funny was funny.
