"My name is Rachel, and I'm a graduate from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor's of Science in Journalism. Some of my passions include taking care of and helping kids, helping people in general, writing and reading.
I have some experience working with children in a educational setting. I volunteered at the Upper Room In Kansas City, Mo., which offers out-of-school education to inner city children. While volunteering there, I helped children in 1st and 2nd grade with their reading. One technique that I used a lot was helping the kids sound out words when they didn't know them, as opposed to just telling them the words. I think this helps them to learn and retain the information better. I also volunteered at an elementary school in Lawrence, Kan. My duties here were helping kids one-on-one with activities and homework in a variety of different subjects. Most recently, I worked at Children's Learning Center, a daycare, in Lawrence, Kan. I mostly took care of, played with and instructed children between the ages of 0 and 4. From all of these experiences, I learned how to interact with a variety of different children, which is beneficial as a tutor as well. No two children are alike; and when helping a child in any setting, it is important to know and cater to his or her personality and learning style. You can count on me to do that!
Besides my experiences teaching and taking care of children, I have previous experiences that have helped me strengthen my writing skills. I have done some freelance writing for Americare USA, been an intern at Natural Home & Garden magazine and Carondelet Health in the marketing department. These jobs, plus my four years of journalism school at KU, helped me gain excellent writing and communication skills. I spent a lot of time being taught by my professors and bosses, and I also spent time teaching others in my class through presentations and helping co-workers who didn't understand their work.
I don't have generic tutoring methods that I would use for everyone that I tut" less...
