"I began my career as a rocket engineer at United Technology Center in Sunnyvale, CA. One of my first tasks was to calculate the moments of inertia of the gimbaled liquid fuel rocket engines. Then I worked at Fluidyne Engr. Corp in Minneapolis doing subsonic wind tunnel testing of aircraft engine nacelles.
One was for the C5A cargo aircraft, the actual engine was 9 feet in diameter. The model was about 15 inches in diameter in a 26 inch diameter tunnel, the velocity in the tunnel was about 600 miles per hour. This required a lot of power, our test site was adjacent to a an atomic power plant. We got steam at 600 Deg. F and 600 PSI from the plant to power the tunnel. The exhaust exited from a 4 foot diameter pipe and looked like it was very hot and fast moving. One day I saw a tunnel technician walk into the exhaust stream, I yelled at him to come back. He vanished into the stream, and came back out a few seconds later laughing at me. The steam lost most of its energy powering the tunnel.
I then decided to earn a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and eventually become a Professor of M.E., I was an Assistant Prof at the Penn State flagship campus. I taught control theory, aircraft sheet metal fabrication. I also taught a systems engineering course at that time, I converted it to solve the linear differential equation problems with the Laplace transform method. Then I finally wound up as Professor of Mechanical engineering at the University of Minn. teaching Robotics, Computer Aided Design, and Machine Design. I published about 20 papers in refereed journals.
