"Hi. I'm an artist who has worn many hats as a Hollywood executive and screenwriter, as a novelist and narrative non-fiction writer, as a teacher of writing on two continents, as a documentary film producer, and as a painter. I served as a creative executive at Showtime Networks, HBO and MTV. There, I gained great experience as a story editor and a de facto producer of such films as "Elvis Meets Nixon," "Harlan County War," and "Charms for the Easy Life." That period flowed into what is now an ongoing career as a screenwriter, first, of mini-series for Showtime, later as a scribe for such companies as Paramount Television and New Line Cinema. I have continued to publish as an author, am at work on a book about contemporary documentary film. I've produced documentary feature films and I created a co-production entity for "docs" between Showtime and New York Times Television.

For eight years I have also served as a highly ranked adjunct professor of screenwriting in the School of the Arts at Columbia University in New York, and I continue to teach there, with pride. I have taught successfully at NYU's Tisch School, at Long Island University's TV Writers Studio, at the Mediterranean Film Institute in Greece, and at SUNY Southampton. Teaching, in fact, flowed straight from my experience as a kind of "literary midwife" to screenwriters in Hollywood. I love guiding scripts to the screen and I'm equally adept at working in other literary forms. There's an old writer's adage, "If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage." I teach on the assumption that if a writer is not really wrestling with their subject, then the manuscript probably won't have much staying power. Serious writers pick their subjects based on a personal (and sometimes turbulent) process of discovery, one that it's my responsibility to help them externalize on paper and then polish into a product that transcends its creator. That process of capturing life with language and launching it into the world is what I've devoted my life to." less...
