"With over 15 years of experience teaching in public schools in San Francisco and Oakland, and another 15 years experience in non-profit organizations, I firmly believe that my greatest role as an educator is as an advocate and facilitator for all students. To become productive citizens in society, all students must acquire life-long learning skills. Only when students have the opportunity to learn in a safe and nurturing environment can they develop confidence in themselves and their own abilities. With their increased self-esteem, they will become more receptive to learning fundamental information and able cultivate critical thinking skills. Just as all students are different, I believe there are many ways to make courses of study that relate to studentsí personal interests and skills. One learning approach that I embrace and that is shown to be proven successful for students, especially those with learning disabilities and ADHD, is based on Howard Gardnerís theory of Multiple Intelligences. With my many years working with special education students, I found that Multiple Intelligences approaches education from a fundamental basis that results in individuals doing their best and being the best that they can be. All students should be given the opportunity to find success in life based on their personal interests and skills. I know that I accomplish my goal as an educator when I see students blossom into confident, productive citizens." less...
