The reason that I decided to become a teacher is simple, I want to change the lives of others. The way that I will impact the lives of my students is by relationally meeting their needs-- academically, emotionally, and by understanding their age or grade level.

Student teaching in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District taught me the importance of building a strong rapport with a student. Initially when I began teaching at Miles Park, there was one student in particular who did not want to adhere to any directions that I gave her. I soon learned that the lack of respect that I was receiving, was because of my feeble efforts to build a relationship before my initial teaching. Once I began to show my student how much I cared for her well-being she began to study harder in my class and give me excellent work; she even began to ask to eat lunch with me instead of with her friends. In this moment I realized the value of rapport and tending to emotional needs.

I carried this valued lesson with me to South Africa; and before I began teaching, I made sure to build a firm rapport first. When I began teaching at Pearson High School, I realized that a great deal of my students were not getting their academic needs met. Students that were advanced were over looked, and the bar was set lower to be reached easier for general students. I immediately began to challenge all of my students academically and differentiate as much as needed to meet all of my students’ needs. The needs of students often go unmet because South Africa fails to recognize eighth grade as a middle school. My experience helped me to realize the importance of knowing the age that I teach.

It is vital for a teacher to truly comprehend the developmental challenges students of this age group are going through in order to meet their needs.
