"My name is Karlin. When I was 26 years old I had a near death experience, and I decided that life was far to short and precious. A large part of our days are spent working, and I decided that if I was going to spend 8 hours a day at work, I wanted to do something that made a difference in other's lives. I began working at a developmental disabilities center in Boulder as an employment specialist. I taught people with developmental disabilities how to keep jobs, and participate in the community. It was very challenging and fulfilling work. As a result, when I moved back to New York I wanted to do something similar. I was fortunate to be hired in the Special Education department of my local school district, as a teaching assistant. These were some of the most beautiful and enriching moments of my life. They led me to realize that assisting wasn't enough, I wanted to teach. So I got my teaching degree in Childhood and Special Education for grades 1-6.

I had many long term substitute positions over the course of about 4 years, both in Special Education and regular education classrooms. It was a fortunate arrangement as I spent a great deal of time with my son. In 2010, I applied for GED Instructor at the Seneca Nation, and this has truly honed my tutoring and teaching ability to a fine art. I don't work with subjects, I believe in working with people. People are complex, and have differing needs and expectations.

I get to know the people I work with, and try to learn what they need the most to accomplish learning goals. In order to succeed, students must feel empowered. They're success is in their own hands, but they often need guidance realizing this, so I work on building confidence. Also, learning should be FUN and relevant. Most of the time, we can develop skills through game playing and exciting activities.
