"I am a lifetime learner and enjoy sharing knowledge with others in the hopes that they'll want to become lifetime learners too. I think that one must continue to learn to enjoy life to the fullest. I think that learning should be interesting and mostly fun, not boring or extremely hard. I believe that everyone can learn and comprehend with the correct tools.
I began tutoring while in high school after assisting my mother, who was a paraprofessional, with special needs students. I assisted with field trips, Special Olympics, and classwork. In college, I minored in English which required a lot of writing but which comes easily for me. I even had one of my professors tell me that he had to do some research just to grade a paper I wrote, of course that resulted in an A. After college, I went into the world of business and later became a substitute teacher with the DeKalb County School System. I was classified mainly as a special educator in the higher grades although I taught English, social studies, and sometimes math. I worked with international students who were learning English as well as inner city and private school students. I have also worked with all age groups from K2-college.
My methods of teaching/tutoring is to make things as simple as possible. If I'm tutoring someone in reading, I ask the student to read aloud. This allows me to see and hear their comfort level as well as they're accuracy. I also asks questions so that I can get a feel for their level of understanding. If I'm tutoring in writing then I ask for a recent written piece so that I can see what mistakes are being made and possibly why as well as what other things may need reviewing or learning. I also like things to be fun so if possible I will incorporate things that the student likes and understands into the session." less...
