"Hi, I'm Andrew! I'm currently an undergraduate at Yale College, majoring in math and music, and taking as many writing courses as possible. I work part-time at Art of Problem Solving, a site dedicated to helping gifted middle and high-schoolers learn math; I work as a teaching assistant for their online classes, run weekly office hour sessions, and grade proof-based homework problems, giving detailed, individualized feedback. In high school, I studied plenty of competition mathematics and pursued independent research, resulting in two publications (one coauthored with a fellow high-schooler, one single-author), and volunteered as a math teacher and teaching assistant at my local Sunday school every week; at Yale I volunteer with the Mathcounts Outreach program, and teach math team practices at a local middle school every week.

In terms of other qualifications: I work as a part-time essay editor at a New York-based Educational Consulting firm, where I help review and revise essays for applicants to top colleges such as Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. When I make comments for my clients, I often start by pointing them to general rules that they might be breaking. Are there run-on sentences? Is the flow interrupted by too many commas? Is the direction of the essay unclear? There's plenty to think about. I also have two years of experience doing long-distance math tutoring over video call: in particular, I've learned to explain the motivation behind each problem I help my students solve, and to explain how a student might find a solution, rather than just what the solution should be. As a tutor, I take great care to help my students develop their own intuition and feel for their subject—after all, my end goal for the student is for them to be able to teach themselves anything they put their minds." less...
