"I am a former high school teacher with eight years of teaching experience. My Hawaii state teaching license is for Social Studies, grades 6-12. I am also educated enough in some science subjects that I would be effective tutoring that as well. I am a former teacher rather than a current one because I have chosen to step away from the profession. This choice was not due to my lack of interest in teaching, however, but more of a frustration with the education system. I am not a malcontent, I was a very dedicated and hard working teacher who grew tired of having the effectiveness of my teaching stymied by a multitude of responsibilities that had little to do with what went on in the classroom. But enough about that!

This is my initial foray into tutoring, but I plan to approach it as I would a classroom lesson. First we will identify clear goals that we want to meet. Then we will begin by building on the existing knowledge of the student, and scaffold the acquisition of new information to help build the student's understanding of the topic being learned. I will use various methods of teaching that will meet the needs of different learners, such as using pictures and drawings for visual learners.
