"I obtained both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I teach English and writing at a local community college, and I have worked in higher education for more than eight years, at both UNCG and Elon University, where I worked in administration and course instruction alongside students, faculty, and staff. My students range in age from Early College to traditional community college to professionals, and come from a variety of backgrounds and career fields.
In addition to my professional academic background, I have more than 12 years’ experience in writing, editing, and journalism. I was the copy editor and a writer at Our State magazine for several years, analyzing, researching, and verifying more than 200 published pages a month, in addition to all web-related copy, in-house advertorial copy, and all miscellaneous materials associated with the magazine and company.
The interest I have in my field of study is reflected in the energy I exert in my work, and in my ability to effectively and willingly communicate with a variety of people, discriminating against no one. I am dedicated, passionate, and thorough in everything that I do, and I attribute this in part to those who pushed me, who instilled in me the benefits of hard work, determination, and success. I have been employed not just as a college English instructor, but as a magazine editor, newspaper reporter, professional writer, copy editor, copywriter, administrative assistant, and in publicity and marketing. I have been a tutor, mentor, supervisor, enrollment manager, scholarship coordinator, and a part of a board that oversees university media organizations. These were not all teaching or tutoring jobs, but they were jobs that continued to instruct me, to guide me toward my current career. They instilled in me patience, determination, adaptability, dedication, resourcefulness, organization, understanding, empathy, accountability, compassion, generosity, fearlessness, trust, and resilience. These attributes, in addition to my education, are what I have gained from my professional, educational, and personal experiences. They are what I have to offer as a tutor, qualities vital to any successful teacher and mentor/tutor, and qualities necessary for creating exceptional students. An outstanding tutor, teacher, and mentor (for aren’t they all the same?) must have an interest — and knowledge — in the area in which they instruct. The best teachers and mentors I ever had were those who had a passion for what they taught. Their objectives were clear, and their enthusiasm and ability to effectively communicate with a varied audience is what set them apart and what ultimately persuaded me to become a teacher and, ultimately, mentor and tutor. English is a subject that I have dedicated my life to.
As an instructor, mentor, and tutor, I believe it is necessary that your demeanor and energy — as it relates to your specific area of instruction — be at its highest. With these qualities of a good teacher and mentor/tutor also comes the ability to create and maintain a strong rapport with those you work with. Trusting, caring relationships are a product of a strong classroom, and clear objectives and good communication also allow for engaged, interested students. All of this is true, too, for the tutor and their tutee. The qualities of a good teacher and mentor/tutor, I believe, ultimately create good students, students who are inspired by and recognize and accept the accountability of their teacher and mentor, their compassion, empathy, patience, and dedication as their mentor and tutor. I am this type of mentor and tutor.
I am willing and eager to assist students in their writing, composition, grammar, or any related area in which they may have questions or the desire to strengthen their skills or further their knowledge in English." less...
