"Although the proliferation of social media has exponentially expanded opportunities to communicate, the expansion has not necessarily improved the quality of messages being communicated. In some cases, message quality has deteriorated because of the "instant" communication capability.

Good communication still takes thought and planning in order to be effective and ensure the audience understands the intended message. As a retired corporate communications manager with 25 years experience writing for different audiences, I have a strong background in writing and editing. My purpose is to enable communicators to cut through superfluous communication that could distract the receiver -- noise that may even be in the communication itself.

My approach to tutoring is to help people focus and refine their writing, reviewing it to see if it accomplishes the intended objective, whether the objective is to persuade, convince, or reinforce the sender's message. I review what the student submits, eliminating unnecessary words and phrases, and then present it back to the originator to see if their intent has survived. My work also serves to provide an extra set of eyes to ensure correct spelling and grammar.

In addition, I help coordinate written communication that may be part of a large initiative, such as a presentation. In reviewing a presentation, I tutor clients on how to convey key messages so that verbal communication, when combined with written communication, can have greater impact on the overall purpose of the communication." less...
