Chemistry in Ballston Lake, NY

Hello John, I am very interested in chemistry on a personal level. I have taken science classes before at college, and I was always very discouraged by how boring and academic the education system makes a subject so profound and engrossing. I want to understand it on an abstract level but also in a very pragmatic way. So, my question is: is there any way, on my dime, that we would arrange lab sessions? I'm not sure how we would go about such a thing. So, let me know if it's possible to bring this idea to fruition, and if there are any books that you think I should check out.
