English in Florence, SC
Hi Mari-My daughter is 8 years old and was adopted from India almost 2 years ago. She knew no English and was never schooled before adopting her at age 6. She is in her 2nd year of 1st grade at a Montessori school. Montessori has been great for socialization, fine tuning motor skills she lacked from being in an orphanage and understanding a school setting, but she is continuing to fall behind in core subjects such as math, reading and writing. She is easily distracted in a school setting, but does very well one-on-one. She has really enjoyed school until recently. She is a very determined girl and tries very hard at everything she does, yet gets discouraged and lacks confidence since she is more on a level of a 6 year old than an 8 year old. I think she is noticing how far behind she is in comparison with her peers, especially with math facts. She can't seem to retain any math facts-ex. basic addition. She hasn't even started subtraction. Her best subject right now is reading and is doing fairly well, but is still behind and has trouble with comprehension. She needs intensive tutoring in basic math facts as well as help in reading comprehension. I'd like to find a tutor that can work with her for 1-2 hours a week during school time. ..Possibly an hour twice a week preferably in the morning before lunch or prior to 3 pm. We have tried after school tutoring, but she is too tired by that time of the day. I'd like the tutoring sessions to be consistent and structured with weekly or monthly goals in each subject so we can see measurable results in these subjects. She also needs help with practicing MAP testing on a computer and help with key language used in MAP testing like: less, lesser, few, fewest, etc. My hope is to have a tutor help her master her math facts: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as mastering independent reading and reading comprehension with AR test style quizzes.
