"I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Florida International University, and I have taught math to middle and high school students for over twenty years. My main areas of expertise are Algebra and Geometry. My goal is not only to focus on skill-building, but also to develop problem-solving skills. I ask questions that diagnose what the child does not understand, rectifying the misconceptions, and then scaffolding the concepts. My methods adapt to the individual needs of each student and their unique learning style. I am currently enrolled in graduate studies in mathematics education at Georgia State University, where I am continuing to expand my expertise in research-based instruction and creative approaches to student learning.
My approach to teaching is built on clarity, patience, and practicality. When students can visualize math, they can build a personal relationship with the content and thus have a much better chance at learning and retaining it. Therefore, it is imperative that I incorporate technology, model the mathematics visually, and provide students with problem-solving activities so that their focus is on critical thinking and not on rote steps to memorize. By building a foundation, students eventually begin to see some of the practical uses for math in the real world and in their own lives.
Overall, I do not view tutoring simply as remediation, but as an excellent opportunity to empower that student to gain further confidence in math, so that they can approach problems with the independence necessary to tackle some of life's more challenging concepts." less...
