Before phones got smart and cellphones ubiquitous I went to Cuba as part of a university study abroad program. Four months previous, I was a Gringo in Chile. But, the day we stepped foot on the island Fidel Castro indicted us as Yankees in a sizzling diatribe delivered from la Avenida Malecón en la Habana vieja. Of Course, I hated Gingo, and I didn't care, either way about baseball. Was Yankee any better?

Unbeknownst, working for foreign language fluency had shoved me into the curtains of an identity crisis. No mystery, mastery was conditional, and acquisition stimulated confidence. But I was confused about something else: Gringo, Yankee, Redneck Mick, Limey, Kraut?

This was back when answering machines did something, and I had just gotten back from class. I could see the red light blinking the second I opened the door. No big deal, I wasn't a hermit, I'd been waiting to hear back about about the next trip abroad: Cuba...
