"There was a time before the smart phone, before social media, and before the Internet, when we typed programs into computers from magazine articles and saved them to cassette tape. The world has changed; however, the foundational technologies are much the same.

My career covers a similar span. I have over 30 years of experience as a Software Engineer. While pursuing my Masters' degree in Computer Science at Western Washington University, I wrote the lab notebook for the introductory programming laboratory, and supervised three sections of students through seven programming exercises. Those students gave me high marks for running the laboratory environment and commented that I was exceptional in providing individual assistance between classes.

I am available for tutoring in computer science, programming, and software engineering techniques. I work best with high school students preparing for AP exams, students pursuing Bachelor's degrees, and adults in training or certificate programs. My method is based on one-on-one or small group tutoring, following the Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science A and Computer Science Principles curricula.

I believe that everyone should have an honest chance to learn. Each student is unique, and it is not always easy to obtain access to technologies that are critical to success in today's world. I want to ensure that there are plenty of opportunities to provide that cognitive nudge makes a key concept 'click', so I will do my best to communicate with your student in a way they will understand.

Depending on student needs, I will balance time between the theoretical focus of AP CS-Foundations and practical coding for AP CS-A. For occupational training, I will also cover professional coding practices, such as revision control, peer review, testing methods, and ethical foundations. Other topics will be covered according to student interest.

I have also taken the Voight-Kampff pledge: I do not use generative AI in producing class materials." less...
