BACKGROUND:
I began tutoring in high school when a neighbor needed help with College Algebra. While in college, I studied Mechanical Engineering and tutored ROTC students in Calculus and Physics, as well as other students on the campus. I also tutor business math courses and standardized tests.
IDEOLOGY:
College entrance exams such as the ACT and SAT do not penalize students for wrong answers. Therefore, a score represents what a student actually gets correct. Weekly sessions allow me to give students continuous feedback on how effective the method and techniques are and what adjustments should be made. As I work to improve tests scores, I also help my students on their homework assignments and tests given throughout the semester, I like to help students wherever I can.
HOW I TUTOR:
When I begin a tutoring session I take a couple minutes to speak with my students to see how their classes are going. This time also allows the student to share any personal issues they choose that may be affecting their mental state. This is VERY important. I have learned that those few minutes actually gives me insight on how I need to approach the student during the session. In general, I allow academically strong students to take the lead in my sessions. This is very empowering to them! I provide guidance and correction as they proceed. I lead most of my sessions with academically challenged students. This approach provides structure and helps boost their confidence as they continue to learn new math concepts.
