As a certified math (and French) teacher for 25+ years with experience teaching all levels from algebra through calculus, and now with over 7 years of experience as a self-employed full time tutor, I know why students "don't get" certain topics. In 6 years teaching AP Calculus, my AP Exam pass rates were as follows:

Year 1 (AP Calculus AB): 88% (in a year where the "veteran" had a pass rate of below 60%)

Year 2 (AP Calculus BC): 95%

Year 3 (AP Calculus AB): 85% (first year in a small school whose Precalculus class had been a joke)

Years 4-6 BC (AP Calculus BC): 100% (67% 5; 25% 4; 8% 3)
