"I love math and as a tutor I look forward to working with students to help them succeed. My goal is for students to learn to love math also. I see it not just as a journey for the student but for both of us to gain a deeper and richer understanding of math. I want to help students to not only be able to solve math problems but to understand where the solutions come from, i.e. how a formula or procedure is derived, so that they don’t just rely on memorization but can solve variations on a given problem by understanding the basic reasoning behind a solution.
I will bring many tools with me to enhance the tutoring experience. As an engineer with a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, I essentially have a minor in mathematics, and will bring that breadth of knowledge to the student. Other than my enthusiasm I will bring patience and the experience of being a working engineer for 38 years using math. I have used math in many of the projects that I worked on as an engineer during my career, from working on Navy fighter jet simulators to testing advanced Navy shipboard power systems. I will use that real world experience to bring math alive to the student. I also bring flexibility in my approach and good communication and leadership skills (As a member of ToastMasters International, I was designated a Competent Communicator and Leader). Also I will use modern tools such as the Desmos graphing application and Khan Academy videos to enhance the tutoring experience.
I worked as a tutor for the Camarillo Tutoring Center in Camarillo CA for a year where I tutored students from middle school to high school, tutoring them in both math and reading comprehension. I also have worked as a volunteer tutor for a year tutoring high school students in algebra for the School on Wheels program, which provides tutoring for homeless students. I also spent a year as a volunteer at the Camarillo library’s homework center for K thru 8th grade students, again mostly with math (pre algebra). I also have experience with dealing wi" less...
