"As a first generation college student, I've always highly valued education not just for myself, but for others. In college, I have guided students, from elementary to high school, on a path to higher education through having conversations about their future or providing tutoring for test prep. Post-college, where I received a BA in Sociology, I worked in HR for 6 years to help adults reach their highest potential.
However, I desired a change and wanted to go back into education, so I joined a tutoring company in San Diego. There not only did I learn how to teach the ACT and SAT, but I've also taught academic subjects like Math, Spanish, and English. I also became a college advisor, helping students create a college list and edit their essays. I have been at this company for 2.5 years and have truly found my calling working with middle school and high school students through a 1-on-1 setting. I also took the opportunity with Hope Leadership Academy to work with underserved and underprivileged students in middle school, leading a classroom of about 15 students and implementing social emotional learning along with a few math classes.
My teaching style is often very visual. I highlight, underline, write notes, draw pictures, use items, etc. so that the student can tangible grasp the content. And as a person with ADHD, I also specialize in tutoring neurodivergent students by going at a slower pace and using even more physical items to teach a lesson. I often encourage students to learn by reminding them that if they are not understanding a concept, it is not their fault but mine as it is my job to find a way that they learn best. This has cultivated a trust with my student to ask questions and engage with their learning." less...
