"Hey there! My name's Dan, and I specialise in supporting students who are learning math and physics outside of traditional schooling, providing the structure they need to stay on track and providing rocket fuel for their ever-growing curiosity, intuition, and mathematical fluency. I'm especially experienced at supporting students who are self-studying a textbook or course, such as the student I taught AP Calculus and AP Physics to over a single summer, or the student I guided through the AoPS Precalculus textbook to make up for a lacklustre precalculus teacher in school.
My teaching superpowers include x-ray vision (intuiting the one mistake that led to an incorrect answer), telepathy (hearing the "question behind the question" when a student is confused), superhuman flexibility (explaining one concept from three or four different perspectives until we find the one that clicks for them), and a sense of humour (which keeps us both smiling even as we're deriving our twentieth trig identity).
I've been teaching and tutoring since 2015, and I've been developing curriculum since 2019, starting at HeyMath in India and continuing into my current role at Art of Problem Solving (AoPS). I've taught a wide range of courses for AoPS Online and have left my fingerprints on most of them, creating new explanations and diagrams for future instructors to use. I even spent the summer of 2023 working full-time at AoPS HQ, where I overhauled the entire Intro to Geometry course for AoPS Online.
I completed two degrees in four years at Northwestern University on a QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship, earning a BS in Applied Math and a BA in Physics (both summa cum laude). I then earned a Master's degree from Durham University (MSc in Mathematical Sciences) and a second Master's from the University of Cambridge (MASt in Pure Mathematics), both funded by a Marshall Scholarship. I scored a 35 on the ACT, 1600 on the SAT, 990 on the Physics GRE, and 5's on ten AP subjects.
I look forward to working with you!" less...
