"Hi! My name is Katya and I'm a specialist in teaching history at the high school and college levels. Often, a major component of history courses is writing essays, so in many ways I am as much a writing coach as a history tutor. I am a patient person who will work at the student's own pace. I see myself in an encouraging role, helping the student actualize his or her own potential. Previous tutees have had measurable progress and success after working with me.

My educational background is in history, with degrees from University of St Andrews, Scotland (undergraduate); University of Toronto (Masters) ; and Catholic University of America (Doctorate).

I have written things as basic as a classic 5-paragraph essay to something as complex as a doctoral thesis, and everything in between! I know what teachers and professors are looking for, and I am able to harness students' innate capabilities to write great papers.

As an historian, I am fascinated by the puzzles of the past, and art history is very much a part of that. Most historians stick to textual sources, but I am very keen on using artwork as a means of understanding the past. With a knowledge of the historical background in which artists worked, I can help students understand the "how" and "why" of individual pieces of art.

I have enjoyed history all my life, so when I got to college it was already clear what my major would be. Three degrees later, I still love history and enjoy bringing the past to life. I do my best to transmit this enthusiasm to my students. History is far more than just "one thing after another"!
