"Hi, I'm Oscar! I'm an astrophysics major at Haverford college, an award-winning creative writer, and a tutor for math, physics, and English students of all ages. In high school, I was a teaching assistant for an 8th grade English class, so I spent hours getting to know my 25 students: their skills, their struggles, their quirks. I met with every student one-on-one, helping them improve their writing and delve into the deeper meaning behind our readings. But I knew I wanted to keep teaching when, at the end of the year, each of my students presented me with a handwritten card expressing their thanks. Those cards have stayed on my desk ever since.
I run lessons the way I write: The top priority is clarity, but clarity is nothing without connection. I get to know every student first, both as a person and through a diagnostic. For writers, I'll ask to see a sample; for a math or physics lesson, I'll watch the student attempt a problem first to identify weak points. After that, I'll clarify the topic with a fun analogy before reviewing the topic, then working through an example with the student. I believe in rigor, and my goal is not to get the student back to grade level but to help them surpass that level and gain expertise. While a session may begin as a remedial lesson, I hope it will end with us going above and beyond the curriculum, and with the student feeling like a true expert.
I have a year of classroom experience as a teaching assistant, and a year of tutoring experience as a math and physics tutor at my high school. As a TA, I was in the classroom every day, guiding discussions and occasionally teaching full lessons. I also ran weekly office hours for our class, where I helped students of all skill levels refine their writing. I met weekly with my mentor teacher to discuss teaching strategies. As a physics and math tutor, I provided homework help and reviewed tests with my students, consistently boosting their scores.
