"Greetings!
I hold undergraduate degrees from Stanford University in History and English, with honors. That said, I am a lifelong musician and professional teacher, performer, and composer. I began studying piano at age 3 and continued through Stanford, where I studied art song and piano in master classes.
I then taught for 10 years at a private high school in Marin (I still teach there as a visiting artist). I have been a classroom teacher in the following: chamber music; orchestra; chorus; theatre; ethnomusicology; history. I directed the school's Writing Center and also served as boys' and girls' golf coach. I received, in 2008, the school's annual award for teaching excellence in the Arts.
More recently, I've primarily taught piano to adults and children alike, and to skill levels ranging from beginners to quite advanced. I pride myself on bringing joy and imagination to the learning process while tailoring lessons to the student's personality and goals, all the while making sure the fundamental basics are there. I use conventional and unconventional approaches: it all depends on the student!
As a writer, I received the 2004 award at Stanford for best research paper in the Humanities. Segments of this paper were later published as liner notes in a Music & Arts classical piano album. And, as mentioned above, I have experience coaching kids and adults alike in writing.
I wear many hats, but I do love teaching others and cultivating both excellence and love for any given discipline.
Thank you." less...
