"I have been tutoring Chemistry for over 8 years now. I have a B.S. in chemistry from UCLA. I have taught General and Organic chemistry to many college students at institutions like UC Berkley, Yale and Rutgers among others. I have also taught high schoolers anywhere from AP to basic chemistry.
I really enjoy teaching as I believe I have good ways of breaking down topics. I enjoy the challenge of explaining the topic in ways that make sense to the student. Often students think they can memorize their way through chemistry. While there are times to memorize information often there are patterns to look for which give chemical insight and intuitions. In my teaching, I like to stress intuitions and showing students how the topics they are learning are actually very approachable and boil down to simple concepts. In organic chemistry for instance I teach you the logic behind each reaction so you can fully understand what is happening and not just feel like everything is memorization.
Chemistry can be a particularly challenging topic for some but I find ways of breaking it down into pieces that make sense to the student. Take for instance Stoichiometry, often teachers provide equations for students to convert between different units. This can be a trap for many students as they memorize these equations and then when a question arises that doesn't seem to fit the equation they learned they freeze up and don't complete the question. This is why I prefer to develop a tool box for students and encourage them to think about ways they can use their tools to get the answers. For stoichiometry, it is imperative that students are comfortable with dimensional analysis. I try to develop those skills when students are struggling in that area.
I have taken Quantum Mechanics, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry as well as Biochemistry.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are struggling in your class or want to boost your academics to the next level!" less...
