"I am a Spanish-American Bowdoin graduate with Biology and research expertise, as well as a passion for cultural engagement through language. Growing up in a town with a large Arabic-speaking immigrant population, I connected early on with Arabic speaking peers and neighbors. My love for the language and culture of the Arab world followed me all the way from middle school through college, amounting to 12 years of study in Fosha, Masri, and Shami Arabic. Similarly, my infatuation with the natural world through outdoor recreation led me to pursue a biology major, where I've explored topics such as marine ecology, plant ecophysiology, immunology, and developmental biology. My academic pursuits stem from personal passions, and that is why I'm excited to share what I know and continue to learn as a tutor of biology and Arabic.
My tutoring background has consisted of college biology mentoring, 1-on-1 tutoring of elementary schoolers, and individualized adult ESL classes. All my experience has been with either a single student or a small group, and these experiences have taught me the value of personal connection in a learning environment.
We all have a reason to be learning what we're learning or teaching what we're teaching. That purpose should shine through in every lesson, conversation, practice opportunity, and homework assignment. This can look a variety of ways. For Biology students, it means finding a core passion for something biological - dinosaurs, evergreens, protein folding - whatever it is that makes a student begin to ask their own questions. For language learners, the passion to connect with a culture through written and spoken word knows no bounds. The details come next - whether preparing for exams or setting personal goals, organized practice is the only way to find success. My method as a tutor is to help students find passion for what they are learning and use that passion to help reach their goals. This is what has brought me success, and what I am excited to share with others." less...
