"Hello, my name is Philip S. and I hold a Master's in Math Education from Georgia State University and a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Morehouse College. I have been tutoring students K-12 for the past 15 years as well as some adults here and there. I originally started tutoring when my college roommate and I bought a Japanese math and reading franchise. The franchise's teaching techniques were based on a Japanese style of teaching that focused on guiding students in a way that allowed them to learn independence and mastery of a particular concept. The students learned self-reliance which when coupled with plenty of repetition, lead students to remember information and perform well in the classroom where there was no tutor present for guidance. I have adopted these same techniques into my teaching style. I've also improved them by using multiple approaches that appeal to different types of learners. Different types of learners (audio, visual, kinesthetic, or combinations of the three) learn best when their particular learning style is constantly stimulated.
Once my business partner expressed the desire to sell the education franchise, I became a math and reading K-12 tutor for The National Lighthouse Foundation. This non-profit organization is one of the largest after school supplemental education tutorial providers in GA. While there I provided tutorial services in Gwinnett, Douglas, Dekalb, Cobb, Fulton, Atlanta, and Clarke County public schools.
I began to work for a private SAT prep firm in East Cobb when I left the foundation. There I continued to tutor K-12 but I also provided SAT, ACT, and GED prep.
Currently, I am a math teacher at a Fulton County High School. I teach Geometry, AP Calculus AB, and SAT Prep. I'm also the son of an ex-NBA all-star and I am well known for my ability to teach the game of basketball. I have coached on various levels and I volunteer in the community as a youth coach." less...
