"Hi, I’m Judy!

I’m a 5th-year Chemistry Ph.D. student at UCLA and I am passionate about helping students succeed in math, chemistry, and physics. I earned my B.S. in Chemistry and B.A. in Asian Studies from UNC-Chapel Hill. Over the last seven years, I’ve taught and tutored students at all levels -from high school to college. I tutored at UNC-Chapel Hill's math and physics help center, where I provided homework support for any students that dropped in. At UCLA, I have served as a teaching assistant for general and organic chemistry courses, leading classes and discussion sections, and peer learning workshops for groups ranging from 8 to over 100 students. I have also privately tutored students in chemistry, physics, and math for over five years, helping them strengthen foundation skills and prepare for exams.

Over my years in the classroom, I have noticed my students perform better in engaging classrooms that utilize active learning strategies. The interaction was what set tutoring and great classrooms from lectures and online videos. In my sessions, I focus on understanding each student’s need, filling knowledge gaps and making learning engaging. I explain concepts in multiple ways, using visuals, analogies, and real-world examples, to guide students to practice and apply their knowledge. I alternative this with guided questions and discussions so students can solve difficult problems independently. I adjust this approach based on the subject and student’s individual needs. My goal is to help students build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and become independent learners.
