"I am Doctor Josh and have been teaching English Literature, Writing, ESL, and Communication for more than 20 years. I have taught students from elementary school through graduate school, and I have spent time as a public school substitute teacher and private tutor for K-12 students. I am adept at understanding the needs of my students at whatever level they may be and have won several teaching awards.
I have a Bachelor's degree in English with a Sociology minor. My Master's degree is in English with a focus on writing, rhetoric, and linguistics. My PhD was in Literacy and Language Education, where I focused on the teaching of reading and writing, rhetoric, ESL, and educational linguistics. I have taught utilizing one-on-one in person, small group in person, whole class both in person and online, and I have taught courses that were online and asynchronous. I am a published scholar of articles focused on the teaching of writing, ESL, and linguistics. These experiences have helped me understand different learning styles with students of all ages.
I value making connections with my students, fostering their love for learning. I love to find the messages and metaphors that click with students based on their personal interests. I am a seasoned instructor who is adaptive to many different learning styles, and I value helping students not just do well on assignments, tests, etc. but to understand the core of the task. My students tell me they enjoy my laid back nature, and my ability to understand what challenges them. My background in linguistics and language-based learning, and explicit instruction, is unusual in the world of teaching, but it affords me the ability to help students understand the particular genres they are being asked to produce. I find that students learn by seeing and understanding models of good writing and practicing their writing with my guidance." less...
