"Hi, I’m a sophomore engineering student at Pima Community College with plans to transfer to UA next year for BioMed Engineering. I have a passion for learning, knowledge, and sharing this passion with others. My spouse is a teacher in training, as learning and education is something we’ve connect on. The majority of my teaching experience is in somewhat informal settings; I have worked as a camp counselor for a total of 2 summers, I’ve taught beginning swim lessons as a lifeguard, and have taught ASL to elementary school classrooms as a volunteer teacher. My primary tutoring subjects are reading and writing. I am an extremely gifted reader and writer, I intuitively learned to read at the age of 3 with no instruction, and completed my first college essay (for my older brother) at the age of 13 on The Society of the Spectacle by Guy Debord, which earned a B. It remains as the worst grade I’ve received on a final draft.
My focus in instruction centers on fostering independence and confidence within the student. Many students are capable of much more than they believe themselves to be, and I find great joy in helping to unlock that capability. I rely on empiricism for instructional methodologies, however I do believe each learner has different strengths as we all have our own ways of relating knowledge in our own brains. I try to make benefit of both of these concepts, working to center the student in the learning process. Passing a difficult class or test is meaningful, however, understanding the core principles on why a particular study skill is beneficial (like note-taking) will allow them to structure the activity around their own strengths as a learner, which imbues confidence that can carry forward for a student’s entire academic career." less...
