"I am currently a college student, pursuing a Bachelor's degree in psychology. Following graduation, I plan to go for my Master's degree in a mental health related field.
For about a year, I have been working as a Student Peer Mentor at my university, for courses such as English composition, Psychology and Philosophy. I am currently a senior, so I'd taken these classes years prior, and many of the students I mentored for were freshman/sophomores. I attend all class sessions, and provide academic support to the students during office hours each week. In addition to this, I meet with the professors who teach the courses each week to discuss the class, students who may need extra help or are falling behind, and ways that the classroom environment can be improved. I have received positive feedback from both the students and the professors, and I plan to continue in this position until graduation.
In addition to Student Peer Mentoring, I have been a volunteer mentor for incoming freshmen for two years, through another program at my university. Before the fall semester, I am paired with a group of students, who I help prepare for the change of environment by giving them tips on note taking, time management, the classroom settings, the professors, how to register for classes, etc., I have also met with some of the students in person to help them find their classes, the offices of their academic advisors and their professors, so that they will know where to find those resources should they ever need them. Just as I do with my Student Peer Mentoring, I make myself available to the students nearly 24/7, and if I am unable to assist them, I direct them to those who are better equipped to do so." less...
