"Hello there!
My name is Lisa K., and I am a certified Physical Science, Earth Science, Biology and Chemistry teacher in California. I have been working with children and teenagers for over 25 years. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, I lived in Israel for 15 years after attending Brown University in Rhode Island. Since returning to the U.S., I have been teaching Hebrew and enjoy sharing my love of that language with children and adults of all ages. (So just in case you want to learn Biology in Hebrew, you are in luck!)
Given my diverse experience, I know how to modify lessons to meet your specific interests and learning styles. I try to work with what makes you smile, so I can best teach you what you need to know and have some fun in the process. I have been working for 17 years in a public charter, independent study high school that specializes in one-on-one personalized learning in Ventura County. Before that, in Israel and in the U.S., I helped create and teach in alternative education schools, both public and private.
Having learned Hebrew as an adult, I have a deeper understanding of what it is like to learn a new language and live in a different culture, which has helped me relate to students from a variety of backgrounds. And yet, I see teaching the sciences as a way to give you knowledge that transcends individual differences, like learning a universal language.
Believe it or not (and as a scientist, I prefer that you do not, until you have sufficient proof!), I love to study and teach the sciences because of the way it trains the mind to think critically, and how it shows us humans the incredible nature of nature, the unity and diversity of living things with and within their environments.
Besides teaching, I write plays, hike, bike, garden, and play the clarinet.
For me, as a tutor, communication is the key to making this work, and I hope if you become my student, you will feel free to ask/tell me whatever you have in your heart and mind to share as we work together." less...
