"My name is Yaya, and I’m a second-year medical student at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in Buffalo, NY! I graduated from Bowdoin College in 2016 with a degree in psychology and a minor in Japanese, having completed all my pre-med requirements during undergrad. Before entering medical school, I spent several years gaining hands-on experience in both education and healthcare.
My teaching experience spans a wide range of ages, needs, and learning environments. I worked for three years as a full-time substitute teacher in my hometown in Florida, teaching across elementary, middle, and high school classrooms. One of my most impactful experiences came when I was placed in a special education setting. After a short-term assignment in an Autism Spectrum Disorder classroom, I was asked to stay for the remainder of the school year. The work was incredibly rewarding and required me to be flexible, empathetic, and creative in meeting the diverse needs of my students. I found deep fulfillment in helping every child learn and grow, regardless of ability.
I also spent three summers teaching for the Institute of Reading Development, where I led reading and comprehension courses for students from kindergarten through high school. This role sharpened my ability to adapt my teaching style to different age groups and learning levels while keeping students engaged and motivated. Later, while working in healthcare roles in Brooklyn, NY, I volunteered as a one-on-one tutor for students from low-income families, strengthening my commitment to education and my community.
Now in medical school, I continue to value teaching and mentoring. I’d love to use my science background, literacy experience, and adaptable teaching style to support students who need a little extra guidance. I'm committed to meeting learners where they are, then helping them go further. Feel free to reach out with any questions!" less...
