My emphasis is on careful diagnosis to identify and address any gaps or weaknesses in prior knowledge, on building a strong understanding of concepts and WHY procedures work, and on fostering a student’s self-confidence and self-reliance. I have extensive background in developing problem-solving ability - for struggling students, for those seeking to excel at math competitions, and for anyone in between. I can also provide enrichment and challenge activities to stretch students’ understanding and help them experience the joy and excitement of math.

I have over 40 years of experience in the field of education, both as a teacher and as a curriculum developer, with a strong specialty in mathematics. I have taught and tutored a wide range of grade levels, from elementary school to college. I have also been a MathCounts coach for 8 years. I received a BA in math from Harvard University and a Masters in Education from the University of New Hampshire with a double concentration in elementary education and secondary math education. I hold MA and NH certification for secondary mathematics (Gr. 7-12) and for elementary education (K-6).

As an elementary school teacher, I have also taught writing skills (including spelling) and creative writing, and I have led literature discussion groups.
