"Daryl's Math, Physics and Programming:

I have lived in the Ithaca area for many years while performing computer programming, software engineering and computer security research.

Although my job experience has been in computer science, my passion is for the natural sciences and mathematics. I graduated from Northwestern University’s Integrated Sciences Program, whose purpose is to give students a rigorous background in a broad array of science fields, including mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics.

I also have a passion about education. I believe that every student can excel, but not everyone learns in the same way, or at the same pace. It often takes time and patience to learn something new. Topics build on each other, especially in mathematics. Understanding calculus depends on understanding algebra, which depends on understanding fractions and arithmetic. Students can be overwhelmed because they have gaps in their understanding of previous material that block understanding of new material. It takes patience on the part of a teacher to understand where a student is, in his or her understanding, and to work with that student to move forward.

I have had a life-long interest and experience with the whole spectrum of mathematical subjects, including algebra, trigonometry calculus, differential equations, geometry. I am fascinated by how the subjects relate to each other and how they relate to practical problems that arise in physics, engineering, and ordinary life.

My advanced training in physics exercised the whole gamut of mathematics. From the point of view of physics, understanding the world means understanding mathematics.

I have had a lifelong interest in physics. I have training in classical (Newtonian) physics, Special and General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. Although my job is not physics-related, I participate in online physics discussions on a daily basis, and work on physics problems that come up in the discussions.
