"Hi, I’m Dave. I received both the B.Sc. in chemistry (1973) and the M.Sc. [organic chemistry] (1975), followed by the Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Duke University in 1979. I have 25 years teaching experience, most recently having retired after 18.5 years as a full professor at the undergraduate level specializing in Organic Chemistry I and II. My teaching experience also includes General Chemistry I and II, and upper-level courses such as Heterocyclic Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry. Prior to teaching, I worked in the life sciences in a variety of capacities over a 26-year period.

I've been an invited lecturer for the Royal Society of Chemistry at Cambridge University and am an author or co-author of 41 publications, eight book chapters and an inventor or co-inventor on more than 170 US and international patents. During my industrial career, I either led or served on project teams responsible for the discovery and/or development of 15 compounds of commercial interest.

Among the honors I have received are election to Chi Beta Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Lambda Upsilon, and Sigma Xi. I am included in American Men and Women of Science, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who Worldwide, Who’s Who in College Faculty, and Who’s Who in America.

I particularly enjoy working with students one-on-one or in small group settings, either remotely or in person. I have taught remotely for two years by Zoom. During the last 18.5 years, I have worked with more than 50 undergraduate research students. Twenty-six of these students are co-authors on published work.

My teaching methods have in no small part been shaped by the ability to bring my industrial experience into the classroom. One of the most valuable attributes I can provide is accessibility. When I taught full time, the College mandated that faculty offer 3 office hours per week; I offered 20 hours per week. Policy details will be provided upon initial enlistment through e-mail." less...
