"Hello, I’m Shela! I graduated with a BA in English and a minor in Creative Writing, and I'm currently pursuing a Master's program in School Counseling. I love working with all kinds of students and have tutored for 3+ years in numerous subjects with my specialty being English/writing. I think being a successful tutor means actively listening to students and supporting them throughout various challenges that may come their way.

My strong suits in tutoring lie in analysis, brainstorming, organization, and revision but I can help with any stage. I also enjoy creative writing, especially poetry, so I would be more than happy to provide guidance in that area too. Overall, having worked with students ranging from elementary age to college, I feel confident in aiding a variety of students by actively listening to their questions and guiding them along their journey as writers.

In college, I was a writing center tutor, helping fellow students one-on-one with their writing assignments. Due to the brief sessions, I learned to emphasize the more crucial elements of writing such as clarity, organization, and conciseness over grammar and punctuation.

Currently, I work as an after school writing teacher for elementary students ranging from 2nd-6th graders. I created my writing curriculum and implemented different activities including group work, peer reviews, and creative writing to get students to focus and engage with their work.

And in pursuit of my degree in School Counseling, I've been interning school counselors at different school levels, which has allowed me to gain a lot of insight into how to interact and assist students with differing personalities, experiences, and backgrounds. It's been a wonderful experience so far getting to build relationships with students not only in the after school system but the public education system as well.
