"With an M.S. in Computer Science I was able to teach a large collection of programming courses populated by a wide range of students from traditional undergraduates to adult learners coming back to school after many decades. Likewise I experienced the same type of student population when I was a professor of Physics after receiving my Ph.D. To make success possible across the varying age groups and learning styles, I always made myself available for assistance numerous hours a week and on certain days for many consecutive hours during which I conducted individual and group sessions. As time went on I developed the concept of the guided lecture where I discussed in turn each step in a problem instead of just tackling the problem as a single entity. This idea was used as I helped the department implement a “workshop” structure where the students were asked to answer a collection of questions that would lead them to a final answer on a complex problem or concept.

As a tutor in more recent years I continued that same philosophy which was to guide the student with targeted questions rather than to answer the complete problem for them and hope they learned something. This way they would see that they actually knew how to solve the problems but had not realized the interconnection between the steps.
