"Hi y'all, I have taught microbiology for many years and am confident I can help you learn about the subject in a fun/interactive way. I have very high teaching recommendation scores and you will find that I am really easy to both talk to and understand. I received a PhD in microbiology in 2004 (a million years ago) and have worked as a professor and in both environmental microbiology and the microbiome space. I have helped numerous students understand the subject through being a total goofball and giving them silly but accurate ways to remember concepts.
I got my PhD from the University of Tennessee in microbiology (I'm southern and just as nice as you've heard southern people are). I'm a Fulbright Scholar who has traveled all over the world teaching people how various bioassays work. But what I loved the most was helping students learn. Seeing the light that goes on in their heads when they connect micro to their daily lives is just incredible. I always worked in a very interactive way in my classes, having taught both lectures and labs to hundreds of students over the years. I create an environment where students are never afraid to ask questions. I had one say to me "I heard I can get the flu from a flu shot" and myself/the rest of the class talked it through and worked on why this was not true. I help students discover things for themselves a lot of the time too. Relating their subject to things that they see in the world really seems to help them retain the information. I've had students come back to me years later and make jokes about things they still remember from my class e.g. horizontal and vertical gene transfer.
I really want to be able to help you both understand and appreciate the subjects that I teach/tutor. I think, if you'll give me a chance, I could really help you." less...
