"I am a biomedical engineering student at Duke University, and I have taken countless advanced math classes in high school and college, such as linear algebra and multivariable calculus. I have also taken molecular biology and have worked in two different bioscience brain research labs. I have a 3.89 GPA and have received either an A or an A minus in all of my courses.
As far as my teaching experience goes, I volunteered at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona for all four years of high school and educated elementary-aged children in the community about animal well-being and how to care for pets in a one-on-one setting. I also gave them lessons on different animals and their habitats and led scientific discussions about them in a classroom setting. Additionally, I was the outreach coordinator for a non-profit organization where I communicated with organizations of elementary-aged students with backgrounds disproportionately represented in STEM and taught students with experiments in a classroom setting. Both of these positions were volunteer positions.
My teaching style revolves around the philosophy of showing students the correct methods in order to allow them to succeed themselves, instead of telling them the answers. For example, for a math problem that a student is struggling with, I would go over the basics of the topic that the problem covers and quiz them on it to make sure that they understand it. Then, I would demonstrate an example, and then ask them to attempt the problem they are struggling with and to walk me through it so I could remind them of steps if they asked me too. If they still didn’t get it, I would walk them through it to get the correct answer, and then spend extra time with them going over practice problems similar to that one." less...
