I’m Jesse, a graduate of Duke University who would like to help your student with their academic needs. I have years of experience tutoring students at the middle, high school, and college level. I previously worked for University of North Carolina at Wilmington as a Writers in Action Teaching Fellow and a Writing Center Tutor. While at UNCW, I studied in their MFA Program, concentrating in Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction. I’ve also worked in the Office of College and Academic Advising at Pine Crest School and as an Essay Coach with College Transitions.

I specialize in helping students in improving reading comprehension, gaining confidence in writing, and tackling standardized test preparation. I am also happy to help students and families by providing overall academic counseling. As a humanities and social science major, I can additionally support students in course work across multiple subject areas. I enjoy helping students develop practical and sustainable study skills that they can carry with them for life.

In an initial session, I make sure to discuss what has brought the student to tutoring, identify how I can best support the student, and outline an individualized action plan for our work together. At the end of each session, I ask my students about key concepts covered to assess how their learning has progressed. This emphasizes overall concepts and provides a good road map of how to proceed.

Above all, I am passionate about educational access and believe that everyone deserves support in their academic journey. As a tutor, I work individually and creatively with each student to find methods of learning that work best for them.
