"Dear potential students,
I can't wait to meet you!
First and foremost, I am a trained Orton Gillingham tutor with seventeen years of experience working with students affected by language based learning disabilities. I also have decades of experience working with children on the autism spectrum, as well as children diagnosed with ADHD. I have a special interest in teaching literacy to neurodiverse learners.
I am an English Composition instructor for my local community college and am skilled at assisting students in revising papers, brainstorming theses, and improving their overall writing quality. In terms of qualifications, I am a certified Dyslexia Specialist through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction. I have my Masters of Leadership in Teaching and am certified through the state of Maryland in Elementary Education and Special Education with an endorsement of middle school English. I hold a BA from Loyola in Maryland where I majored in Writing with a minor in English.
I am a quiet, gentle person who enjoys reading and relaxing at home with my rescue dogs, husband, and our two sons. I am told by past coworkers and administrators that I have a calming presence that makes new students feel comfortable. In terms of tutoring, I love the feeling of being able to teach a client something in a way that aligns with his or her learning style. It's so gratifying to watch someone experience that light bulb moment after the information is presented in a new way. I have confidence in systematic, diagnostic teaching and know that I am capable of delivering it in a way that it works for each individual student.
I worked at a nonpublic school for children with multiple disabilities, then went on to work at a private school for dyslexic students. There, I taught literature and one-on-one tutoring in Orton Gillingham, LiPs, Megawords, SLT, Wordly Wise, and Visualizing/ Verbalizing.
