"Hello, my name is Jake and I am available as a biology tutor! I have a lot of experience with biology and tutoring/teaching! I graduated magna cum laude from the University of North Carolina Asheville with a B.S. in biology in May 2020. "Hello, my name is Jake and I am available as a biology tutor! I have a lot of experience with biology and tutoring/teaching! I graduated magna cum laude from the University of North Carolina Asheville with a B.S. in biology in May 2020. The situation was extremely uncertain in 2020 as to whether classes would be in-person and if schools were admitting students, so I worked for 3 years, and then in 2023 I returned to school as a master's student in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas. I earned my MA in 2025 and started my PhD in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at KU in 2025.
As an undergraduate, I was an "embedded tutor" (what my department called undergrad TAs) for two semesters in a course where students were instructed on experimental design, introductory statistics, and the program R. I was also a "departmental tutor" for two semesters. Departmental tutors held weekly office hours and assisted students with tasks including homework, studying for exams or quizzes, writing scientific papers or lab reports, exam or quiz corrections, and explaining concepts students did not understand in class. The courses students needed assistance with were the introductory level courses: experimental design (the course I was a tutor in), zoology, botany, intro to cell biology, and ecology and evolutionary biology. In addition to these duties, I partook in a program in which UNCA students tutored English second language students at the local high school. I primarily assisted students with biology.
As a graduate student, I have acquired more teaching experience. I am in my fifth semester at KU and have been a TA every semester. I have been a TA for an introductory bio lab (twice, so I have had 6 lab sections), an online introductory bio course for non-bio majors (once), animal behavior (twice), and am currently a TA for a biology of sleep course.
I greatly enjoy helping people understand science and love seeing when it "clicks" for people. Hopefully, I can help it "click" for you!" less...
