"Hello! My name is Juanita. I have been a tutor for the past 19 years and a teacher for the past 10 years. I have worked in many different types of educational environments, from teaching K-8 to tutoring at the high school and college level and have a background of helping students to grow and learn independently. I was a peer tutor 12 years ago which led to being the lead peer tutor, as I understand the things that can make or break a tutoring experience for students. Since my graduation from the University of Michigan in 2012, I have taught middle school math students as well as high school students in summer and after school programs. I have tutored well over 1000 hours in that capacity, and privately well over 100 hours.

I tutor math and several science courses. My approach to most subjects is to ask questions to informally find out what my students know and what they are having difficulty with. I learned in my undergraduate program that the big things that help students in particular with math are using correct terminology, teaching the appropriate math language, and providing them with a safe space to be wrong.

I do have a couple rules about the tutoring I provide. First of all, I do not feel comfortable helping a student complete graded work. I feel that it is unethical to do something for you that you are being graded for. Second, I will try as hard as I can to be warm and kind, but my first priority is making sure that learning is taking place. With that being said, I will go above and beyond to make sure you have all that you need, including creating practice work, problems that are similar to what you are working on, and going through any review or test with you to make sure you understand what it is that you're missing." less...
