"I’m Ted! I have a Bachelors in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics from BYU. I discovered my passion for tutoring math during an Abstract Algebra course. First as a student in a study group, I contributed by explaining concepts others were having difficulty with. I did so well in the course, that the instructor offered me the opportunity to be his part-time teaching assistant. I would help his students with their homework. Many times their difficulty lay in not understanding previous concepts and also lack of skill in solving problems. Becoming proficient in math is like learning to play the piano. It takes consistent practice solving problems. I helped the students with their homework problems by assessing their lack of understanding of concepts and skill by asking probing questions. I would then help with the obstacles they were experiencing. Sometimes the difficulty was in missing a problem solving strategy. It was really gratifying to see students increasing their skill and confidence. Later I was able to assist my two sons individually with their learning disabilities, frustration, self doubt, lack of skill and confidence in completing their math homework.
In preparation for tutoring I have searched for best tutoring practices used by experienced teachers. I have implemented these in my planned tutoring methods and procedures. I have also identified online math and teaching resources for my students and myself. Going forward, I will be refreshing my skill in higher level math courses and also tutoring them.
To get started, pre-booking conversations will identify what help is wanted and a convenient session time. I will then develop a lesson plan and relevant reference documents for the student and post them in the Wyzant whiteboard. I will respond promptly to all inquiries. Please contact me with any questions or to schedule a session. Thank you!" less...
