"Hello! My name is Husena and I’m an undergraduate majoring in Chemistry at Georgia Tech. My tutoring approach stems greatly from the teachers I had in high school – it’s because of my Chemistry teacher that I realized what I wanted to major in at university. These teachers were passionate both about their subjects and teaching, which made them engaging and interesting to learn from – qualities I try to embody as a tutor.

I place a lot more emphasis on active practice rather than passive reading and listening, which is reflected in my tutoring. First, I ensure the student has a solid foundation in the concept we’re discussing, filling in holes or correcting misunderstandings. Then, the best way for the concept to stick is to attempt problems. So a session would consist of explanation and discussion first, then guided and unguided practice problems. This method is supported both by science and experience. The best way to learn a concept is to apply it to questions you haven’t seen before.

My tutoring is also enhanced by the fact that I am also a current student. Sometimes, a student’s perspective can help explain a tricky concept in a different way so it finally clicks. A misunderstanding of the basics can be more easily identified by a fellow student than a teacher/professor.

My previous experience in tutoring involved teaching debate theory and leading sessions in my high school debate club, which I co-founded. I also informally tutored students 1-2 years younger than me in Chemistry and Mathematics. As for my qualifications, I am currently maintaining a 4.00/4.00 GPA, and I graduated the IB Diploma Programme with a 44/45 score. In the IB, I took HL Chemistry and HL Mathematics: Applications and scored the maximum grade of 7 in both exams. I also achieved a first-time score of 1570 on the SAT, with a split of 780 in EBRW and 790 in Math.
