"Hi! My name is Dr. Debralyn and I am happy that you are considering me as a tutor! I approach tutoring from a holistic perspective. Academic achievement does not exist in a silo; thus we must acknowledge and address external conditions that make achieving academic goals difficult (e.g., study skills and habits). I am passionate about creatively communicating concepts (e.g., research, entrepreneurship, science, technology, engineering, art, math, social-emotional skills, and physical fitness) in a way that is easily understandable to young people. I work with young people and their caregivers to set, work towards, and eventually reach the young person’s academic goals.
I have about 16 years of experience in community-based educational spaces. This experience encouraged me to make learning interactive and engaging so young people will want to participate in the space. My favorite subject to tutor is math, specifically pre-algebra and algebra. I also enjoy supporting students with reading. I love to see the light in young people’s eyes when they finally get a concept that they were struggling with previously. That sense of personal accomplishment is what I work towards. My background in social work combined with education allows me to not only connect with young people, but also guide them as they reach their academic goals.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a Human Development and Family Science minor, a Master’s in Social Work with a Children, Youth, and Families certificate, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education (Learning Sciences and Policy). I am also a licensed master social worker (LMSW) in Maryland." less...
