"Hi, I'm Monica! Through my multiple experiences working with youth, I realized I wanted to teach, mentor, and support youth success. As a student, trying to learn in a classroom made up of 25 students or so can be difficult. I realized I wanted to provide students the tools necessary to be independent and find their love for learning! When correcting students, I teach them how to self-correct, find answers to questions, study, read, and remain organized. I recognize the importance of integrating study skills and organization in a tutoring session. These skills mentioned can be the key to success. I also recognize the importance of tutoring based on a student's learning style in order to be the most effective.
Spanish has become my area of expertise. I have taken formal courses since the 4th grade with native Spanish Teachers. Upon entering high school, I was placed in an honors course and passed the AP Spanish test with a 780/800 as a sophomore. At UCSD, I worked towards my Spanish Literature major. I had the opportunity to also study abroad in Cádiz and Madrid for seven months. Thus far, all of my regular students improve a whole grade and/or become more confident.
I am also a trained writer and proofreader. I have supported high school students with creative writing, argumentative essays, and many personal statements. In high school, I took English Honors, AP Lang, and AP Lit, all of which I passed. At UCSD, I took upperclassmen courses in English Literature in which I excelled in. As a graduate student at Columbia, I have done extensive writing.
