"Hello! I am a tutor with a bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing from Bard College offering services in College Applications, Creative Writing, English, ESOL, and Arabic. I have been tutoring with the Cambridge School Volunteers at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, where I help seniors write their college essays one on one, since 2023. I also work at the Center for Arabic Culture teaching 4-10 year olds Arabic, where I have worked in a classroom setting with several teachers for four months so far. Finally, I have been volunteering at The Cambridge Public Library Literacy Program, where I tutor adults one on one in ESOL, since May. I am also working on getting certified to teach K-12 English, having taken and passed two of the required exams so far.
My favorite part of working on college application essays is by far the brainstorming process. Because I have a degree in creative writing, I am able to support individual students’ visions for their pieces by turning the exercise from an intimidating “essay” into a more personal narrative piece. My visible excitement for my students’ ideas goes a long way to help them feel that they can succeed. Although I have a very sharp eye for sentence craft and typos, I am always sure to only give students as much advice as they have time and energy to act on.
I strongly feel that when students are excited about the task ahead of them, they work more diligently. For instance, when a ten-year old student refused to write a short story in Arabic about a butterfly, I was the only teacher able to get him to write anything at all. I accomplished this by asking him to incorporate subjects he liked into the butterfly narrative–subjects I knew he liked because I make a point to get to know my students. It is my job to foster interest in the subjects I teach when it is possible to do so. So if you’re looking for a calm, patient, yet passionate tutor, I’d love to work with you or your child. Thank you for reading, and best of luck with your learning endeavors." less...
